The Eagles confirm they trolled Tom Brady with Philly Special 2.0

In the Super Bowl champions' first game of the season on Thursday night at Lincoln Financial Field, the Eagles defeated the Atlanta Falcons 18-12 by ripping a page from the Patriots' old playbook.

The Falcons had driven 70 yards on 12 plays before coming up short, as Jones made three grabs for 60 yards on the series, including an 18-yarder on third-and-17. Wearing his gold Hall of Fame jacket, former safety Brian Dawkins riled up the sellout crowd with owner Jeffrey Lurie by his side and led a chorus of "Fly Eagles Fly". Nick Foles ran a pattern down the right sideline, catching a pass thrown by wide receiver Greg Ward.

"I reminded the team that last night isn't going to define us, in terms of our red-zone play for the year", Quinn said. Quarterback Matt Ryan went 1-for-9 with an interception in the red zone, according to ESPN Stats & Info. Jay Ajayi would score from 1 yard out later in the drive to give the Eagles their first lead of the game.

If Atlanta could have at least proven it has moved on from its red-zone and other offensive issues that plagued it so often last season, there could be plenty to build on heading into the next game against Carolina.

Philadelphia ended up winning just like it did in the divisional round of the playoffs, stopping Atlanta on the final play of the game near the goal line. It was the key in the Eagles' win.

"It was deja vu", said cornerback Ronald Darby, who covered Jones on the last play this time around instead of Jalen Mills.

Part of the reason for the Eagles' struggles in the passing game is personnel. Hicks also committed a penalty on fourth down that allowed the Falcons to have one more play at the end but the defense bailed him out. The Falcons could not find the end zone in three ties and when head coach Dan Quinn chose to go for it on fourth down, Devonta Freeman was stuffed at the line of scrimmage. The Eagles ran the New England Patriots' failed trick play from that game.
