Dozens of passengers on Emirates plane suddenly fall ill mid-flight

Ten people who were rushed to hospital Wednesday after a jetliner from Dubai was quarantined in NY appear to have the flu, according to preliminary tests.

The flight was quarantined on the runway at John F Kennedy International Airport for hours after 106 people on the flight reported feeling ill, reported NBC New York.

Emirates released a Twitter statement confirming the event and revealing that about 10 of the superjumbo jet's passengers had fallen ill.

The airline said in a statement that about 10 passengers on the flight from Dubai to NY had become ill on board.

"The Emirates cabin crew were super-helpful, they were not in panic mode, which was incredible", Makki, 36, said in an interview outside of John F. Kennedy Airport.

It arrived after 9 a.m. local time in NY from Dubai. Passengers were required to fill out forms and have their temperature taken as they exited the plane. An additional eight people were treated at the airport, he added.

An airport source tells Fox 5 News that there was a "medical emergency" onboard the plane. Phillips said the flight from Dubai stopped in Mecca, where there's a flu outbreak.

"Health officials are processing tests now to determine the cause", Phillips continued, adding: "Symptoms still pointing to the flu".

Haynes further reported CDC public health officers were working with local authorities to examine passengers and take all necessary healthcare measures. Health officials were allowing the remaining passengers to disembark only after checking each one for symptoms, Phillips said.

Emirates Flight 203 arrived at JFK around 8.50am local time (1pm GMT) on Wednesday, carrying passengers who were coughing and reportedly had fevers of over 100 degrees.

Vanilla Ice shared his experience in a series of tweets, writing, "So I just landed in NY coming back from Dubai and now I'm stuck on the runway with like 1000 police, ambulances, fire trucks, this is insane".
