Tropical Storm Gordon will bring minor impacts to Northwest Florida Tuesday

The National Hurricane Center in Miami said in its 5 p.m. EDT advisory that it expects Gordon to be a hurricane when it reaches coastal MS and Louisiana sometime late Tuesday.

Sustained winds of tropical-storm-force are likely in the zone under a hurricane warning, with the possibility of hurricane-force gusts, over 74 miles per hour.

Also new with this update, a Hurricane Warning has been issued from the mouth of the Pearl River over to the Alabama-Florida border. Of course, people were even more concerned for New Orleans, as the city suffered so much damage after Hurricane Katrina in 2005. However, Gordon should weaken as it moves further inland. This will mean some flooding possibilities for Gulf Shores, Orange Beach, and the Mobile area. The National Hurricane Center predicted a "life-threatening" storm surge of 3 to 5 feet (0.9 to 1.5 metres) along parts of the central Gulf Coast.

As Gordon continues to track northeast across parts of the MS and Louisiana Wednesday afternoon, the threat of strong wind gusts will increase across parts of NWLA and SWAR.

In addition, "a couple of tornadoes are possible through tonight across the southern and west-central Florida Peninsula", said the NHC.

Rick Scott urged Floridians and those visiting Florida to check the weather, as weather experts advise beachgoers to swim near a lifeguard due to high rip current risks.

The storm is expected to cross from southwest Florida into the Gulf Coast later Monday afternoon.

Schools in parts of coastal Louisiana, Alabama, Florida and MS were closed Tuesday, and others announced they would open for only part of their normal day.

Florence isn't now a threat to land and it's still unclear what impact the storm will have on Bermuda.
