On the CPU front, the Cortex-A76 cores are likely to deliver up toa 75 percent performance boost and up to a 58 percent better power efficiency, while the GPU performance is up by 46 percent with up to 176 percent higher power efficiency.
Compared to the previous generation 10nm process, the 7nm process delivers 20% improved SoC performance and 40% more efficiency, said Huawei which surpassed Apple to become the second-largest global smartphone seller behind Samsung in the second quarter of this year.
Starting from its basic block design, Huawei's the first with the Kirin 980 at two ends. The synergy between the Dual NPU results in an image recognition capability that is greater than the sum of two-the Kirin 980 can recognise up to 4,600 images per minute, up 120 per cent compared to Kirin 970. The Kirin 980's DSU features 4MB of L3 Cache. The Kirin 980 SoC has an interesting octa-core design, featuring two high-performance Cortex-A76 cores clocked at up to 2.76GHz, two mid-performance Cortex-A76 cores at up to 1.92GHz and four low-power Cortex-A55 CPU cores at up to 1.8GHz.
With last year's Kirin 970, Huawei introduced a built-in neural processor to its chipset.
The TSMC 7nm process technology enables Kirin 980 to pack 6.9 billion transistors within a "1 square cm die size", up by 1.6 times from the previous generation.

However the most payment-efficient model will seemingly be elevated than the mid-range model, potentially complicated customers. According to Ming Chi-Kuo's latest revelation, the construction material of the cheaper iPhone will also be different.
"The Huawei Kirin 980 is a further demonstration of our commitment to improve our customers' experience" Said Larking Huang, Managing Director of Huawei Australia Consumer Business Group.
Moving towards the GPU, it's another component that Huawei needs to focus on if it wants its processors to become competitive. On top of that we have AI noise cancellation, for higher quality calls, AI-powered photo galleries (much like Google Photos), and AI Game Suite that can identify your gaming needs and compensate for them.
Speaking of standing out, Huawei's building on its NPU with the Kirin 980. While we need to wait more than a month for the Mate 20 devices, the company now launched the Mate 20 Lite smartphone with mid-range specifications.
