Iran's Top Leader Says No War or Talks with US

If anyone was unsure what Iran's supreme leader thought of President Trump's offer to hold talks after the United States reimposed "the most biting sanctions" on Iran last week, all doubt has been removed, per Reuters. "Beside sanctions, they are talking about war and negotiations", he said via his official Twitter account in English.

The Associated Press, meanwhile, reported that Khamenei said that negotiation "with the bullying and very eager government of the USA means giving it an instrument through which it can add to its hostility". "I do not call it betrayal but a huge mistake in management", Iranian state TV quoted Khamenei as saying, in his first reaction to the reimposition of USA sanctions.

They also appeared to rule out any hope of fresh talks with Washington, which US President Donald Trump had proposed after walking out of the landmark 2015 nuclear deal and reimposing sanctions.

Washington this week reimposed sanctions on Iran's purchase of US dollars, its trade in gold and precious metals and its dealings with metals, coal and industrial-related software.

German companies should be allowed to continue to invest in Iran as much as they want and the German government is looking for ways together with its European allies to ensure that financial transactions could still take place, he added.

He noted that negotiation with the current USA administration is impossible. "I do not call it betrayal but a huge mistake in management", Mr Khamenei said.
