The eclipse will not be visible to residents of the United States as by the time the moon rises at night in the USA, it will have already completed its journey through Earth's shadow, or Umbra.

At 8.24pm, the moon will start moving into the umbral shadow of the earth.

The July 27/28, 2018 total lunar eclipse is the 17th total lunar eclipse since 2001, the beginning of this century, which will see 85 total lunar eclipses.

In another rare event, Mars will appear directly below the moon in the skyline tonight at near maximum brightness. The director of the Nehru Planetarium said besides arranging five telescopes, the centre has also organised lectures related to the eclipse.

You will find several videos and space channels live streaming the lunar eclipse.

If you miss this lunar eclipse you will have to wait until January 21, 2019 to see another one.

As a scientist I don't like the use of the description "blood moon".

The Moon will begin a long journey through Earth's shadow on Friday afternoon, with the complete trip taking just over 6 hours.

"That's the special thing about this one, and why it's such an unusual one, and translates into it being the longest possible lunar eclipse".

The eclipse will have been visible from Southern Africa to the Middle East, Russia, India, and Australia.

The shadow of the Earth's atmosphere filtered through sunlight appears red when it hits the surface of the Moon, giving the eerie-looking blood moon.

A reddish tint is, to some degree, common in all lunar eclipses, even partial ones.

"The reason that the moon turns red is because atmospheric scattering causes red light to pass through the atmosphere and the composition of the atmosphere can change if volcanic eruptions or forest fires occur", said Tom Kerss, an astronomer with the Royal Observatory Greenwich.

The longest lunar eclipse of the century will happen late Friday or early Saturday, depending on where you live.

The lunar eclipse can be seen from anywhere on the night side of Earth. Totality will continue for 1 hour and 43 minutes, with the Moon taking on a deep red-orange color during that time. The light of all the sunsets and sunrises occurring simultaneously is reflected off the moon, making it seem red. Enthusiasts anxiously waited until past midnight for clouds to give way to the spectacular event to become visible.

It will appear like a bright star, before fading from sight a few minutes later.
