Tropical trouble: Beryl's remnants threaten Puerto Rico, as Chris spins near Carolinas

At 11 p.m. Monday, the National Hurricane Center issued what it said would be the last update on Beryl, saying that remnants of the storm were over the northeastern Caribbean. with maximum sustained winds of 40 miles per hour.

The Tropical Storm will be causing increased swells off the coast of North Carolina and mid-Atlantic states which "could cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions".

The National Weather Service (NWS) maintained a hazardous weather outlook for Puerto Rico, the US territory still recovering from the devastation wrought a year ago by Hurricane Maria, warning of thunderstorms and wind gusts of up to 50 miles per hour.

An Air Force hurricane hunter aircraft dispatched into the center of the storm found that sustained winds are near 60 mph, and extend up to 70 miles from the center of the tropical system.

Thousands of Puerto Ricans lost power Monday as driving rains from the remnants of Tropical Storm Beryl neared the island, which was devastated by Hurricane Maria 10 months ago.

A new tropical storm, Chris, formed off the coast of North Carolina coast early on Sunday. Some pockets of moderate to heavy showers and occasional gusty winds are still possible however, with rainfall accumulations of 25 - 50mm (1 to 2inches) with isolated higher amounts.

Putin to attend World Cup final
Russia's run to the quarter-finals, which included a shock defeat of Spain in the last round, has been unexpected. Since the collapse of the Soviet Union, Russia had never managed to go past the group stage.

The DDM said a high wind advisory is in effect.

Tropical Storm Beryl degraded over the past weekend as it moved into less favourable atmospheric and sea surface conditions.

At that point, a cold front should absorb Chris and rapidly sweep it to the north-northeast toward Nova Scotia and Newfoundland.

"Other than some impacts at the beaches, there are no direct impacts expected for the MYR and Grand Strand areas if Chris does become a hurricane", said Steve Pfaff with the Wilmington National Weather Service.

Many North Carolina beaches were closed due to heavy surf and risky currents caused by the storm, the governor's office said.

Beryl has a low chance of reforming into a cyclone, with the possibility of reformation at 30 percent within the next five days, the National Hurricane Center said. The Hurricane Center declared Beryl as simply a remnant disturbance on Sunday since it weakened below tropical-depression strength.
