Canada tariffs on U.S. goods from ketchup to lawn mowers begin

In an interview that aired Sunday on Fox News, Trump said he could quickly sign a revised NAFTA with Canada and Mexico, but instead wants to land a better deal for the U.S. Asked about the timing of an agreement, Trump said: "I want to wait until after the election".

The strongest Canadian trade actions since World War II will go in place on July 1 and stay until the USA removes the steel and aluminum restrictions, according to Canada's government.

But the NAFTA talks have been stalled for several weeks and Lopez Obrador enters the scene as tensions between Canada and the United States have intensified as the two countries have become embroiled in a trade dispute.

The stress on the trading relationship between Canada and the U.S.is already starting to raise the cost of construction and manufacturing in the United States, according to Sandy Baruah, president and CEO of the Detroit Regional Chamber of Commerce.

Trump told Fox about proposing to his G7 partners during last month's summit in Quebec that they remove all trade-related barriers and taxes.

He added that he would wait until after the fall elections.

At the same time, Beijing is reportedly pressing the European Union to form an anti-U.S. pact against Trump's trade policies. Washington is conducting a national security study that could lead to tariffs on imported cars and vehicle parts.

Mexican president-elect Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said he supports the continued renegotiation of NAFTA, and wants his own team of experts to be part of the talks before he takes office December 1. Gomez, who said he has campaigned with Lopez Obrador, will be advising the president to use the U.S. government's security interests as leverage in the ongoing trade talks with U.S. President Donald Trump's administration.
