Members of Saudi Arabia's national football team will face a disciplinary penalty for their crushing 0-5 defeat by Russian Federation in the 2018 FIFA World Cup opener on Thursday.

USA broadcaster Fox has apologised to viewers for the offensive gesture Robbie Williams gave during his World Cup opening ceremony performance.

Fox, the TV network that aired Williams' performance in the United States, released an apology via The Hollywood Reporter: "The 2018 FIFA World Cup opening ceremony was a newsworthy event produced by a third party and carried live on Fox".

Organizers prepared three tents that are adapted to receive visitors daily and without any charge, and the main tent takes almost 600 people.

In a World Cup first, the video assistant referee system was available for the match between the tournament's lowest-ranked teams, though it wasn't used. There is also a snack area provided by 15 "Food Trucks".

Russia midfielder Alan Dzagoev is set to miss the rest of the World Cup after suffering a hamstring injury in their opening 5-0 win over Saudi Arabia, a Russian club doctor says.

The 2022 FIFA World Cup finals will take place in Qatar, while the 2026 finals will be the first to have 48 teams in attendance. The 2018 tournament kicks off in Russian Federation on Thursday and the 2022 World Cup will be hosted by Qatar.

Alongside the goalkeeper, Ezzat named two other players - defender Omar Hosawi and striker Mohammed al-Sahlawi - without specifying what action would be taken. FIFA president Gianni Infantino addressed the crowd in Russian and said "football will conquer the entire world" during the cup.

Speaking as an analyst on SuperSport after the match, Okocha said: "Deservedly, they were beaten 5-0, I think they exposed the standard that they are playing at, the level of their league". We didn't play the way we planned to.

Details of the punishment are yet to be revealed by the Saudi football authorities.

Uruguay won their match on Friday against Egypt with a last-minute header.

Minutes before Saudi Arabia kicked off the tournament against host nation Russia, Putin said: "I congratulate all of you at the start of the most important championship in the world".
