It's Trump's party now as GOP learns not to cross president

A US Republican congressman and Donald Trump critic who survived a sex scandal lost his re-election bid Tuesday hours after the president launched a scorching personal attack against the lawmaker from his own party.

The New York Times reports that Sanford "all but concedes" in a speech in Charleston tonight, telling supporters, "Based on the numbers I see, I think I'll end up losing this election".

Sanford is a former governor who has never lost an election in eight races in SC, even after he admitted to an affair with a woman in Argentina.

Arrington says Sanford criticized Trump too much, calling him a "Never Trumper". "He is better off in Argentina", the president wrote, referring to Sanford's trip to South America in 2009 to have an affair while his unknowing staff in the governor's office told reporters he was hiking the Appalachian Trail.

Though he waited until a few hours before the polls closed to issue his endorsements, President Trump was a big victor in Tuesday's primary races.

The staunchly conservative former governor, who at one time had been considered a potential presidential contender, was defeated in a Republican primary by a first-term state representative who had made fealty to Trump the defining issue in the race. She has focused her campaign on her support for Trump. Alabama's Martha Roby was forced to a runoff.

Over and over again, Rep. Mark Sanford (R-S.C.) has warned that President Trump is turning his party into a "cult of personality".

Trump endorsed Arrington in his tweet Tuesday on the race.

"Mark Sanford and the career politicians cheated on us", Arrington says in the ad.

In an interview with Politico a year ago, Sanford said Trump had "fanned the flames of intolerance" and called him unprepared for the presidency.

Corey Stewart, a combative conservative Republican and immigration hardliner who almost upset Ed Gillespie for the party's gubernatorial nomination past year, won the right to face Democratic Senator Tim Kaine, the 2016 vice presidential candidate, in November's U.S. Senate election in November. In a February 2017 Politico piece, he said Trump has "fanned the flames of intolerance".

Trump's popularity with Republican primary voters has been enough to drive other intra-GOP Trump antagonists, like Arizona Sen. She is tough on crime and will continue our fight to lower taxes.

"The idea of some allegiance not to the Constitution, but to the president, was not what I signed up for", Sanford said.

"Don't underestimate Corey, a major chance of winning!" the president added.

Voters also cast ballots in Maine, Nevada and North Dakota, as the field for the mid-term elections begins to take shape. He is better of in Argentina.

Yes, that reference to Argentina is the thrice-wedded president (who may have had an affair with a porn star) accusing Sanford of being bad at marriage, apparently without a hint of irony.

He was the top aide to Trump's presidential campaign in Virginia in 2016, but was sacked for staging an unauthorized protest of the Republican National Committee. She will face Democratic challenger Joe Cunningham in the heavily Republican district this November.

The drama evaporated from both races after direct intervention from Trump and his political team to convince Cramer - who'd already publicly said he wouldn't run - to change his mind and launch a campaign in February. She has served in the Statehouse since 2016.
