After shaking hands for 13 seconds shortly after 9 a.m. Tuesday, Mr. Trump placed a hand on Mr. Kim's shoulder and the two walked toward a meeting room.
Balakrishnan, Singapore's Foreign Minister, made important visits to Washington, Pyongyang and Beijing in recent days to ensure that there would be no last-minute spoilers for the historic meeting hosted by the city-state.

The summit is not expected to last beyond Tuesday, with both leaders set to leave Singapore shortly after concluding their meetings. The talks were seen as a key first step to a formal end of the Korean War, which remains unfinished after a 1953 armistice.
Trump, who is seeking to persuade Kim to abandon his nuclear weapons program, called it "my honor" as he became the first sitting USA president to sit down with a North Korean leader.

The United States trade representative office told the Washington Post that the US actually has a trade surplus with Canada. Trump said he pushed for the elimination of trade barriers, including subsidies and tariffs, at the G-7 meeting.

The US has offered North Korea "unique" security guarantees to persuade it to give up its nuclear arsenal, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Monday, on the eve of a historic summit in Singapore. The North Korean participants included former military intelligence chief Kim Yong Chol, Minister of Foreign Affairs Ri Yong Ho, and Ri Su Yong, vice chairman of the ruling Workers' Party.
In September past year Trump took to Twitter amid an ongoing spat with North Korean policy makers, calling Kim Jong Un a "madman".
He reiterated that the goal of the summit remains the same: "the complete, and verifiable, and irreversible denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula".
