Yahoo Messenger is going the way of AIM and MSN

The company announced today that it will be pulling the plug on its popular chat service on July 17, after which users won't be able to access or sign in on Yahoo Messenger.

Yahoo Messenger is to be discontinued in just over a month. "As the communications landscape continues to change over, we're focusing on building and introducing new, exciting communications tools that better fit consumer needs", the company writes in a blog post.

Yahoo Messenger: The first messenger app Yahoo Messenger was launched on March 9, 1998. Late a year ago, AOL said goodbye to another of the early Internet's popular messaging apps, when it shut down AIM. The desktop version was killed off in 2016 and, with Yahoo! transitioning from a standalone company to a piece of Verizon's Oath content network, many chunks of the old Purple Palace are destined for the scrap heap. It's unclear when Squirrel will be available to everyone, but Yahoo wants to transition Yahoo Messenger users to Yahoo Squirrel in due time, and with Yahoo Messenger closing soon, we estimate Squirrel should leave closed beta sooner rather than later.

It was an early hit and popularised the idea of "over the top" messaging that was not tied to a specific service provider. In 2017, Verizon purchased Yahoo and set up Oath as the holding company.
