Boy Scouts continue flag-planting tradition for Memorial Day

After the planting, the Boy Scouts saluted the grave sites.

This week, they placed thousands of flags on the graves of those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.

Volunteers and local Boy Scout troops are taking the time to place flags on all 6,000 veterans' graves at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Rochester.

"We greatly appreciate the work that the Boy Scouts put into this every year and we have a lot of veterans in the town who particularly appreciate it". "They deserve to be remembered and appreciated", he commented.

Memorial Day is a federal holiday formerly known as Decoration Day. First enacted to honor Union and Confederate soldiers following the Civil War, it was expanded after World War I to pay tribute to Americans who have died in all wars.

The Rock Island National Cemetery will hold it's memorial day service on Monday starting at 10:45 a.m.

All citizens of Fayette County are invited to attend and encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets. Women Veterans of Southwest Missouri Post 1214 is putting on the Memorial Day ceremony here this year, and they were also in charge of making sure the approximately 15,000 flags we're put in place before the holiday.

After reading maps, walking cemetery grounds, and placing flags, numerous troops also stopped for a visit at the grave of Alice M. Chester (1893-1972), who founded Girls Scouts in Milwaukee in 1921.

Flags were provided by the American Legion, the Puyallup Historical Society and Veterans of Foreign Wars.
