Google Assistant Will Soon Make Calls on Your Behalf (Really)

Google News is a handy little tool, and lately, it's been given a lot of attention over at Google HQ.

Other than starting a wave, the attendees at the Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, California, don't seem that into it.

"To help you understand habits, focus on what matters, switch off and wind down". An initial version of this update will soon be rolled out which, for now, will allow users to get business hours from different businesses.

Google is also giving the Assistant a home base of sorts with a new page that can be accessed with a simple swipe up. The AI assistant deployed pauses and "ums" and "mmm-hmms" to sound more human in conversation with real people.

Apart from this, Google Map has also integrated Augmented Reality navigation on the screen. The new AR feature aims to eliminate that problem by utilizing your smartphone's camera to overlay directions into the real world to help you figure out which way to go.

He further announced to launch "smart compose" to all Gmail users this month and said the users will have someone completing their sentences. According to a blog post detailing the new feature, Google Duplex is created to enable the AI Assistant to conduct "natural conversations to carry out "real world" tasks over the phone".

The report seeks to add new information to press accounts of what may have been transpiring at NBC News behind the scenes. That is one reason the company has been taken to task for not hiring an outside investigation firm to handle the inquiry.

The video below, which Google published to its YouTube channel back during CES 2018 in the beginning of the year, shows off what some of the features and interaction will be like, and Google demoed some of the interaction today during its keynote speech. You don't have to preface any of your requests with, "OK, Google or Hey Google!" anymore, and you don't have to separate one request from another.

On stage at I/O, Google reminds us that the original voice for Assistant is called "Holly".

Smart speakers are becoming a wide-spread commodity, with Amazon's Echo devices and Google's Home coming in a variety of shapes, sizes, and prices, and Apple joining the fray with its own HomePod earlier this year. Using the two in tandem, you'll be able to follow and subscribe to publications using your Google account, with no need for credit card details or separate accounts.

Moreover, the tech giant also announced support for better media playback and a new way for developers to promote their voice apps, called Action Links.

This convenience also raises a couple of pertinent questions, the biggest one being, would the person on the other end of the line be notified that he or she was speaking to a machine?
