Reinking was almost naked, wearing only a green jacket and brandishing an assault-style rifle when he opened fire in the parking lot and then stormed the restaurant, police say.

Mr Aaron said Reinking lived near the restaurant in the working- and middle-class Antioch neighbourhood of southeast Nashville, and police used yellow crime scene tape to block public access to an apartment complex about a half-mile from the Waffle House. Police credit a quick-thinking customer who wrestled the gun away from the suspect for preventing more loss of life. Police said the gunman arrived in a vehicle registered to Reinking, though the gunman was last seen walking away from the scene nude. "There was plenty more people in that restaurant", he said.

Reinking's alleged motive is unknown and authorities warn that he may still be armed with a rifle and a hand gun. He added that the four weapons have been captured, including the AR-15 that Reinking utilized in Sunday's shooting.

State police in IL, where Reinking lived until a year ago, revoked his state firearms card at the request of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the four guns were taken from him.

According to police, Reinking was arrested by the Secret Service for trespassing near the White House in July 2017.

"He made a decision to rush the gunman, actually wrestled that assault rifle away, tossed it over the counter".

"I take no pride in him charging a loaded gun", James Shaw Sr. said.

Approximately two weeks later, Reinking was served papers by authorities revocating his license to own weapons.

"I think it's safe to say that person of interest and suspect in this matter is synonymous, " he said. In June 2017, Reinking exposed himself at a pool while wearing a pink woman's house coat, according to a police report.

Nashville Mayor David Briley has called for tougher gun control following Sunday's shooting at a cafe in the U.S. southeastern state of Tennessee, which left four people dead. He then went into the restaurant and continued shooting, they said.

In Tazewell, Illinois, where Reinking's guns were originally seized, Sheriff Robert Huston said in a Sunday press conference that he wasn't sure if Reinking is headed back to the area, but that his department is ready for it.

"If I didn't rush him I probably wouldn't be here", said Shaw".
