Inmates Killed, 17 Injured During Incident at Lee Correctional

Photo Lee Correctional Institution in Bishopville, S.C., is a maximum-security prison. Officers were unable to stop the fighting and secure the prison until around 2:55 a.m. on Monday. The incident started at around 7:15 p.m. Sunday.

State police have been called to one of South Carolina's most risky prisons.

In a statement, SCDC Police Services and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division said they will be investigating the incident.

The Lee County Fire Department tweeted out photos of multiple crews at Lee Correctional.

There wasn't any more information immediately available on the incident.

Javadekar also said that state government is taking speedy action into the incident because it wants justice to be done. He should apologize to the nation, "Javadekar said".

The facility, which opened in 1993, houses around 1,500 prisoners, including some of the state's most violent criminals, reports the Associated Press. An inmate was killed during a fight in July 2017, another was stabbed to death in November, and a third was killed in February.

In March, inmates at the prison held an officer hostage after taking control of a dorm room, The State reported.

Authorities added that all prison staff and responding law enforcement were "safe and accounted for".
