Former President George H.W. Bush's spokesman Jim McGrath released a statement about Barbara Bush's health.

She's recently been in and out of the hospital. "Bush, now age 92, has decided not to seek additional medical treatment and will instead focus on comfort care" at home in Houston following consultations with her doctors and family.

During an interview five years ago, former first lady Barbara Bush spoke about her faith and how she uses it to face death.

McGrath says Bush is "surrounded by a family she adores, and appreciates the many kind messages and especially the prayers she is receiving".

"When I was a kid, she would read to me and my siblings", Bush said. Bush stood with her husband as their son George W. was sworn in as the 43rd president. "She was a greater conscience to her husband, to her sons, to her daughter and to those who had the benefit of being in her proximity". The former first lady also gave her name and support to Maine's only children's hospital, founded in 1985 - The Barbara Bush Children's Hospital at Maine Medical Center in Portland. The other was Abigail Adams, wife of John Adams, the nation's second president, and mother of John Quincy Adams, the sixth president.

George H W Bush, the nations 41st president, has also suffered health issues, and spent a period in intensive care for pneumonia a year ago.
