New Ford Focus Debuts, Coming Stateside in 2019


At simultaneous events in Europe and in China, Ford pulled the curtain back on the next-generation Ford Focus.

"The Focus was designed from scratch to make it look sportier while also having more room inside for people and luggage".

Sitting on a new platform, the Focus has a longer wheelbase that should open up more space for backseat passengers.

The SUV segment of the market is really booming, and Ford expects that more than a third of new vehicle sales will SUV within the next couple of years.

It's unclear when this new Focus would be sold in the United States.

The last Focus was somewhat lacking in safety kit - not helped by the fact it was an ageing auto.

Take a quick glance at the new Focus, and you'd be forgiven for thinking this isn't the clean-sheet design Ford claims.

Ford says the Focus engines bound for North America will be announced closer to the car's launch.

The Focus hatchback will be offered in ST-Line trim - which has a suspension 10mm lower than the standard car's - and as an Active-badged near-crossover variant, which sits 30mm higher than standard. "We're also very proud of the Focus name".

Some additional lead time is to be expected between the Focus's sales debut in Europe and China later this year and its eventual launch on this world of the world.

The serial production of hatchbacks and station wagons Ford Focus of new generation will begin in June at the plant in the German city Serlui.

Adaptive cruise control (ACC) enhanced with stop & go, speed sign recognition and lane-centring for effortlessly negotiating stop-start traffic.

Ford's Pre-Collision Assist system now detects pedestrians and cyclists and can automatically apply the brakes if it detects a potential collision. There's also driving modes selector complete with Sport mode.

"We grabbed it with both hands, to develop the best mid-size family auto that money can buy". Evasive Steering Assist will also help the driver steer around stopped or slower vehicles to help avoid accidents.

Mechanically, it carries over the outgoing generation's 1.5-litre EcoBoost turbocharged petrol engine, available in two power output levels - 150 PS and 182 PS. An improved steering system and eight-speed automatic transmission are also new, along with revised gasoline and diesel EcoBoost engines.

Joe Bakaj, Ford European product development vice president, said: "Our all-new Ford Focus is the pinnacle of technology and driving appeal in its segment". An 8.0-inch touchscreen will be available along with other features including Wi-Fi, a motion-activated liftgate, telematic services, and a wireless charging pad for mobile devices.

It's not yet know which versions will be coming to South Africa, but overseas powertrain options include a pair of three-cylinder petrol engines: Ford's trusty 1.0-litre EcoBoost and a new 1.5-litre EcoBoost, both featuring fuel-saving cylinder deactivation technology which is an industry first for three-cylinder engines.
