The 36-year-old midfielder has played sparingly for United this season, after a heart scare earlier this season.
Internationally, he represented England thirty-four times and was part of the squads for the World Cup finals in both 2006 and 2010.
The former England worldwide, 36, made the announcement at United's press conference on Monday to preview the Champions League last 16, second leg against Sevilla.
"I think it's pretty much already been said, to be honest with you", he replied when asked whether he was retiring.
Carrick, capped 34 times by England, has looked likely to leave United in recent summers only to pen extensions at a club that rewarded his fine service with a testimonial a year ago.
Carrick added: "All the glitz and the glamour that can surround things these days, Scott doesn't seem too interested in that, which is fantastic - especially at this stage of his career".

Carrick made just one Premier League appearance this season and saw Nemanja Matic partner Ander Herrera and lately Scott Mctominay as his replacements in the United midfield. "I've been training hard and we'll see what happens for the rest of the season", said Carrick.
"Hopefully I can get some game-time at some point between now and the end of the season", he said.
