The preliminary Omaha-area rate rose to 3.2 percent in January from 2.8 percent in December. The total number of working Iowans decreased to 1,625,300 in January - 300 lower than in December and 800 lower than a year ago.
The Department of Employment and Workforce said in a news release Monday that the unemployment rate last month was 4.3 percent.
Hawaii had the lowest state unemployment rate in the nation in January, at just 2.1 percent. "The state's employers are looking to hire the 51,000 job seekers". Many employers have said they're unable to add jobs because there is a lack of available talent with the right qualifications.
For the month, manufacturing and professional services sectors saw the biggest job gains, adding about 600 new workers each, while the education and health services industry added about 500 jobs.

The mining sector, however, registered negligible growth of 0.1 per cent, as compared to 8.6 per cent rise in January a year ago . Inflation softened last month mainly on account of cheaper food prices and lower cost for fuel.
Unemployment rates grew in January in each of the state's six metropolitan areas.
Maryland's January unemployment rate was 4.1 percent, also unchanged from December, but down from 4.3 percent a year earlier.
Although the total number of nonfarm payroll jobs continues to increase, the rate of growth is slowing, increasing 2.2 percent in 2017 compared to a recent high of 3.5 percent in 2014, according to data from the labor department. This was a result of 4,105 unemployed residents no longer seeking employment within the past four weeks, and a 3,189 decrease in residents employed. The number of unemployed people was up more than 2,000, to over 100,000.
In February, the US economy added 313,000 new payroll jobs, the biggest single monthly increase since July 2016.
