Bose debuts audio augmented reality platform

Unlike other augmented reality products and platforms, Bose AR doesn't change what you see, but knows what you're looking at- without an integrated lens or phone camera, the company said.

While Augmented Reality has been restricted to visual overlays, games and other visual applications, Bose, a company better associated with making headphones, seems to think a little out of the box.

Announced at SXSW, the Bose AR sunglasses will be available to manufacturers, research institution, developers and the company partnering with ASICS Studio, TripAdvisor, Yelp, Strava, and TuneIn among others.

Bose AR Prototype Glasses. The Bose AR kit is an acoustics package that Bose hopes to add to wearables such as eyewear, helmets, headphones, as to deliver a novel take on reality augmentation. The miniature acoustic package is embedded in each arm which will keep the audio private.

Kim Talks: South Korea solicits Russia, China support
China has long urged the United States and North Korea to start bilateral talks about Pyongyang's nuclear weapons programme. In the meeting, Chung briefed on the results of his recent talks with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and U.S.

Bose is not messing around here either; they have created a $50 million dollar fund to und to finance companies that would like to work with the new audio technology and is providing an SDK and updated glasses later this summer.

As for the concept sunglasses, we are not sure whether Bose intends on launching it for the masses just yet. The AR wearable is fitted with motion sensors and uses the Global Positioning System from an iOS or Android device to track the wearers location.

Bose said we can use these glasses when travelling and visiting a historical landmark as they can simulate historic events at landmarks as well as play speeches of a historical figure that you may be visiting. Additionally, the Bose AR glasses will be able to translate a sign, or explain the story behind a painting and of course, use it for music as well like say putting a playlist right in front of you or controlling playback via head gestures. Secondly, augmented reality (AR) as a technology is largely relegated to stickers and visual details. Unlike the Sony product, these sunglasses are being primarily focussed at AR rather than audio that can also do AR. It knows which way you're facing, and can instantly connect that place and time with endless possibilities for travel, learning, music and more.
