But Wrinkle in Time fans should take some heart. It's the messenger itself with the problems.
The film, based on the 1962 book series by Madeleine L'Engle, is familiar and lacking surprises, but not entirely without its fun. Who and Mrs. Which. That project lingered with DuVernay long after she finished it, so she was eager to go in a different direction. Would that Winfrey could speak Angelou's own words, though, rather than the often hollow lines she's given by screenwriters Jennifer Lee and Jeff Stockwell. A Walt Disney Pictures release playing at Franklin Park, Fallen Timbers, Levis Commons, Bowling Green, and Mall of Monroe. Running time: 109 minutes.
The experience of filming "A Wrinkle in Time" was incredible, Reid says, not only because it meant acting alongside the likes of Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon, Mindy Kaling and Chris Pine, but because of DuVernay's set.
Murry has his head in the stars - his dream is to "shake hands with the universe" - and he teaches his enthusiastic, bespectacled offspring about some big concepts regarding space and time. And there are plenty of movies that kids loved but didn't hit the mark for adults - "Hook" comes to mind, since it's a Disney movie - and that's OK!
Why Was The Book A Big Deal?
But A Wrinkle in Time's faults are much more than a truncated version of the source material. Most of the digital creations we've seen elsewhere and in more believable CGI form. Many moments are attractive and surreal, while others are just plain weird (and not always in a good way). Adorably embarrassed to even be called an "emcee" and even more embarrassed to admit that she had the same name as the Ruff Ryder's Eve, she makes a clear distinction between herself and other legendary ladies in hip-hop, one of them being Heather B. who co-hosts with Sway.
Reid is simply outstanding in her ability to portray Meg as a fully fleshed and believable character, filled with both resilience and doubt.

But there are times when the film doesn't quite flow. Zach Galifiankis and Michael Pena round out the cast. He's also not particularly amusing or endearing, which makes Galifianakis' appearance all the more awkward.
Actor Mindy Kaling fits that bill. All that is topped by "the wonderful and surprisingly mature performances" of Deric McCabe, Levi Miller, and Storm Reid, he adds.
Meg understandably gets upset and lashes out and slams a basketball into the nose of the popular girl that victimizes her the most. McCabe, as with many actors playing precocious children, is more often sitcom-y silly and unusual than believable. Which talks about Meg being a rare, enlightened individual. Unfortunately this helps makes Meg and now six year-old Charles Wallace (Deric McCabe) outcasts at school, derided by fellow students and teachers alike.
"These are big issues that we put in a small, kid-like manner in the film, but hopefully they plant seeds with this generation".
L'Engle's source material is a sneakily deep novel for youngsters, and Jennifer Lee and Jeff Stockwell's screenplay doesn't do almost enough with those themes of death, loss and parents letting their children down. It's also refreshing to see people of color in lead roles as heroes, originally written as white.
