Chris Cornell Plays 'You Never Knew My Mind' By Johnny Cash

While they never worked together in Cash's lifetime, Cornell did record a song based off of Cash's poem "You Never Knew My Mind" and an unreleased song from 1967 titled "I Never Knew Your Mind".

The track features on Johnny Cash: Forever Words - an album of the legendary singer-songwriter's "unknown poems and writings transformed into songs".

“I met the man once or twice in my life, and he was so gracious and he was such an influence on me as a musician. "And since that time I've felt like he's maybe one of the bigger presences of my life in terms of an artist that I'm a fan of". It's a Mermaid Avenue situations, a music legends words becoming songs even if the legend in question never turned them into songs. "So 'You Never Knew My Mind' was not something that he would have released at that time because my mother was standing beside him".

Johnny Cash: Forever Words features contributions from Kacey Musgraves, Rosanne Cash, Alison Krauss & Union Station, Kris Kristofferson & Willie Nelson, John Mellencamp, Brad Paisley, Elvis Costello and more.
