About a half an hour later a second quake with a magnitude of 5.5 in the same area with a depth of 39 kilometres.

A magnitude 7.5 quake struck in the middle of Papua New Guinea on Sunday, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The U.S. Geological Survey says the magnitude-7.5 quake hit about 89 kilometers (55 miles) southwest of Porgera early Monday in the Pacific island nation.

Earthquakes are common in PNG, which sits on the so-called Pacific Ri ng of Fire, a hotspot for seismic activity due to friction between tectonic plates.
