Not just homes any more: Airbnb expands into hotels and luxury spots

"Airbnb Plus is intended for guests looking for attractive homes, exceptional hosts and added peace of mind", the company wrote.

Over the course of the year, the home-sharing company's highest-rated hosts, dubbed "Super Hosts", will get access to new perks including personalized URLs for their listings and discounts on smart home products from vendors like Nest, CEO Brian Chesky told a crowd of Airbnb users and media in San Francisco.

Airbnb is trying to move into the mainstream.

Airbnb is adding more lodging types to its site, such as boutique hotels, bed and breakfasts, and high-end rentals. It's adding four new property types: vacation home, unique space, B&B and boutique hotels.

When Airbnb was founded in 2008, it offered a platform for people to rent out their rooms, apartments or homes to strangers as a way to earn extra cash. Those spaces were divided into just three types - shared spaces such as a couch, private rooms or entire home. It now offers 4.5 million places to stay in 81,000 cities around the world.

Airbnb today unveiled a Roadmap for its core Homes business.

In addition to those tiers, which are being announced at an event at San Francisco this morning (I overheard that there may be more than 1,000 employees at this event as well as a few dozen "super-hosts"), the company is also adding new ways to search for property on its service.

The matchup everyone pretty much knew was coming before the 2018 Olympic Women's Hockey Tournament even started is now official. Both teams left everything they had on the ice during the sudden-death overtime, but neither team scored, leading to a shootout.

The company says there'll be around 2,000 locations across thirteen different cities to begin with, though that's certain to increase as the scheme grows more popular with hosts. Unique spaces includes things like treehouses and Airstreams, while boutique hotels would be non-chain hotels.

New Airbnb Collections will offer unique home collections created to match the most popular types of trips travelers are searching for-like, family trips, group getaways and honeymoons. Airbnb Plus homes have been inspected and verified in person against a 100+ point checklist covering cleanliness, comfort and design. They will also let people find homes that are best for certain types of trips, whether they are traveling for work or traveling with family.

It will launch in the USA spring season.

The company is also adding new luxury tiers, Airbnb Plus and Beyond by Airbnb, in an effort to attract high net-worth customers who may have balked at the idea of staying in someone else's house.

As part of its 10 anniversary recognition, Airbnb on Thursday launched a new tier of homes called Airbnb Plus.

The expanded offering will ruffle the feathers of some corners of the travel industry, particularly as the platform will significantly undercut the commissions taken from hotels by sites such as Expedia and Booking.com.

The company is projected to make around $200m in annual gross sales from its Experiences packages, which offer travellers the chance to book local activities in the town or city they're staying in, by the end of 2018, up from $10m in 2017.
