Hiring process for next Vigo Schools Superintendent already underway

The board expects to follow a similar process as used by previous boards whereby an executive search firm will be selected in the coming weeks.

The decision now goes to the full School Board.

The board last year appointed Spielbauer to serve as the acting superintendent through the current school year, which ends June 30, following the retirement of John Friend. All goals come with numeric targets the board looks to hit by 2022. They also want to increase the number of schools that exceed overall academic growth expectations as set by the state, and decrease the achievement gap between black and Latino students and their white peers.

If the school district bans the flag, it will be one of the few school systems in the country. Some board members say this time is different because political tensions aren't as high as they were in 2013.

But that wasn't the only area where Casserly wanted to push the board.

With a concern about state funding last February, the board of finance then kept town and school budgets at the same spending levels, leading to a $3 million reduction to the school board's budget and a $1.6 cut to the town.

"I believe that their proposed budget will adversely impact education as we work to recover from the budget uncertainty in 2017-2018", Karp said.

"I'm hopeful that while not everyone will agree with it, that if we as a board and leadership team can be behind it, we can promote it to the whole district and have excellent reasons why we think this is the best for our kids in moving forward as a district", said board member Deb Brandt.

MPS Interim Superintendent Anne Moore said public information meetings will be held soon to give parents of students whose schools are closing more info on where they will go, but did not give an exact time line for when that information will be released.

Casserly told her his commentary had nothing to do with Wilson's competence.

"I think it needs to be re-evaluated" explained Dean, I'm not going to stand here and tell you that we're the best school system in the state but we're not almost as bad as they make us look".

Board members and the superintendent said the timing for the project is important.
