Cleveland Cavaliers guard Isaiah Thomas (3) walks off the court after being ejected in the third quarter against the Minnesota Timberwolves at Target Center.

Pierce said on ESPN's The Jump that he did not want the Celtics to show a tribute video for Thomas on the same night his jersey was being retired.

The next opportunity is February 11, the same night the Celtics will send Pierce's number to the rafters at TD Garden.

There was a growing controversy in Boston over showing the tribute to Thomas the same day the organization was retiring Pierce's jersey.

Isaiah Thomas released a statement via Twitter to say that he'd like the Celtics to focus on Paul Pierce and his career when they retire his jersey on February 11 in Boston because of the "controversy" that has emerged.

"I look forward to coming back and playing in Boston on Feb 11th and see all of the great fans whom I will always remember for their love and incredible support the past few years".

Thomas had declined to have a video tribute during the Cavaliers' previous visit to Boston on January 3, which he was forced to miss as he continued his length recovery from a hip injury.

In five games with the Cavs this year he is averaging 13.6 points per game.

Pierce played 15 seasons in Boston and is the franchise's number two all-time leading scorer.

Boston traded Thomas to the Cavs for Kyrie Irving during the offseason. He made ten All-Star teams as a Celtic and reached the finals twice, winning the title in 2008 and losing to the Lakers in seven games in 2010.
