Pirates RHP Gerrit Cole traded to Astros in 5-player deal

The Houston Astros have acquired starting pitcher Gerrit Cole from the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Outfielder Jason Martin is also a part of the package.

Feliz, 24, has a 5.13 ERA for his career working out of the bullpen while Musgrove, 25, was nothing more than a swingman in the Astros system.

Musgrove, Moran and Feliz likely will open the season with the Pirates. If the Pirates are able to transform him back into the pitcher that had a 1.88 and 2.74 ERA in 2015 and 2016, he could be a solid fourth or fifth starter.

The Yankees have once again missed out on acquiring Gerrit Cole.

Houston will now feature a rotation with two Cy Young winners in Justin Verlander and Dallas Keuchel and a former top pick in Cole.

Over 127 starts for the Pirates, including three in the postseason, Cole went 59-42 with a 3.50 ERA.

The players the Pirates got in return for Cole is a bit underwhelming.

With Cole gone, Jameson Taillon and Ivan Nova will anchor the rotation ahead of Trevor Williams and Chad Kuhl. The 25-year-old is a career.290 hitter in the minor leagues since Miami selected him in the first round of the 2013 draft. Cole's biggest weakness in 2017 was the long ball as he allowed a whopping 31 of them after only allowing 36 total in the previous four seasons combined. Moran was a spare piece for Houston, but he is a big-league ready third baseman with a chance to hit for a high average while offering 20-homer pop.

Luhnow said Moran "projects to be an everyday third baseman on a championship team".

Feliz is a hard-throwing right-handed reliever who struck out 13.13 batters per nine innings in 46 appearances last season. Martin, 22, played all three outfield positions and batted.278 with 18 home runs in Class A and Double-A.
