Mnangagwa was dismissed two days later and fled the country, only to return triumphant in the wake of the coup.

Moyo said the army acted unconstitutionally when it briefly took power from the government in November.

"It was an excellent meeting, I came to Luanda to brief my senior, President Lourenco about the transition that has taken place in Zimbabwe", Mnangagwa said.

Moyo also said that the new government under Mnangagwa was an "illegal regime" that had struggled to assert its legitimacy.

Mugabe resigned after weeks of uncertainty in Zimbabwe, catapulted by his sacking of Mnangagwa as one of his vice-presidents, in what was widely reported as a covert attempt by the veteran statesman to pave the way for his wife Grace to succeed him as president.

He accused Mnangagwa and Chiwenga of involvement in the Gukurahundi massacres of the 1980s that claimed the lives of around 20 000 regime opponents, including children and women, in the country's southwest.

"This is in part because our trade patterns have been aligned to service the requirements of former colonial powers and partly because many African countries essentially produce similar goods, mainly agricultural and mineral commodities", Geingob said in a statement delivered during the official opening of the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair previous year.

According to Zimbabwe Independent, a privately owned newspaper, the academics said they had "no knowledge of her proposal, progress reports, thesis examiners and outcome".
