Nissan auto technology will read drivers' brain waves

The Japanese auto manufacturer today announced its Brain-to-Vehicle (B2V) technology, which it says can predict human behaviour and detect when a driver is feeling uncomfortable thanks to "brain decoding technology". If you're being ferried around in an autonomous vehicle, Nissan says, the sensors will allow the auto to detect any discomfort and adjust its driving style to create a more pleasant riding experience.

Nissan will showcase this new and exclusive technology at the 2018 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, which kicks off this Sunday, January 7th.

"When most people think about autonomous driving, they have a very impersonal vison of the future, where humans relinquish control of the machines", stated Daniele Schillaci, Nissan executive vice president.

Nissan believes the B2V technology makes the driving experience more fun and personal for the driver, compared with fully autonomous vehicles.

And for detecting, Nissan is saying artificial intelligence can change the driving style when the technology is in autonomous mode. Bloomberg interviewed the Nissan researcher behind this mad wheeze, Lucian Georghe, who was insistent that the brain-scanning hat setup is "not about reading thoughts". What this technology is aiming is to help newer cars better anticipate driver decisions and work with the human operator rather than to function autonomously.

It says the technology is part of the Nissan Intelligent Mobility effort to transform "how cars are driven, powered and integrated into society".

The driver wears a special hi-tech device that measures brain wave activity. The system lets your brain communicate with your vehicle and control it to help pursue your mission.

Nissan claims to have developed a auto that can read its driver's mind.
