A Monterey County resident recently died from the flu, the Monterey County Health Department announced Thursday.

So far this season, the cases of reported flu have been similar to previous year.

There have been 12 overall for the season, which officially began October 1 and lasts through March 31, although some seasons begin early and can linger into late April to mid-May.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 15 children in the US have died this year from complications from the flu.

It's been an active start to the flu season in Delaware.

"I would not be surprised if there is flu in every county", Mirivel said.

Health officials urge anyone, 6 months of age and older, who has not yet been vaccinated against the flu, to get a shot as soon as possible, as it takes about two weeks for protective antibodies to develop.

"It's not too late to get a flu shot if you haven't already". Some county health directors decline to confirm flu-related deaths, per DHHS direction. As of December 22, 2017, DE has recorded 129 laboratory-confirmed flu cases this season, with 49 of those cases requiring hospitalization. Last year's numbers are the second highest since 2014.

The state says 8 people have died from the flu statewide this flu season, which typically peaks in late January or early February.

"Older adults, individuals with chronic health conditions, pregnant women, young children and infants are more vulnerable to flu illness".

Nationally, flu season has arrived stronger than projected, according to federal health officials.
