Washington hands No 2 Kansas first loss of season

A 74-65 loss to Washington was the second straight game Kansas (7-1) struggled against a zone defense.

The talent pipeline Romar had assembled at Washington, where first-round National Basketball Association draft choices came and went so fast we barely came to recognize them, was ruptured when athletic director Jen Cohen fired Romar. Kansas is allowing opponents to score just 61.3 points per game.

Kansas' main source of offense in the loss was guard Lagerald Vick, who poured in a game-high 28 points on 12-of-23 shooting by repeatedly attacking the soft spots in the middle of Washington's zone. Butler scored 24 points and added 19 rebounds. While Kansas thrived offensively in the paint in the first half, scoring 22 inside, Washington was able to keep pace getting 18 in the restricted area - another factor in UW taking a 36-34 lead into the locker room at halftime. Kansas leads the all-time series edge with Arizona State, 5-4, and won the last meeting, 108-76, on March 22, 2003, in the second round of the 2003 NCAA Tournament in Oklahoma City. The Huskies were never again threatened. Freshman guard Jaylen Nowell tops the team in scoring (17.9) and Noah Dickerson (16.4 points, 8.0 rebounds) is next, but the junior forward is questionable with a shoulder injury. Vick's jumper at the 13:07 mark sparked a 10-3 KU run to pull his team within a possession of Washington at 53-52 and forcing UW head coach Mike Hopkins to call a timeout to try and halt the KU charge.

"We just weren't ready to play", Kansas coach Bill Self said. "The previous games I wasn't shooting really well, so it's just good to see the ball go in the hoop". Devonte Graham is coming off a 35 point outing for the Jayhawks. Graham also scored three points in last year's NCAA defeat to Oregon.

Colorado 75, New Mexico 57: Dominique Collier scored 14 of his 16 points in the second half and the Buffaloes broke open a close game with a late run to beat the Lobos. "We can't count on the crowd to bring our energy and get stops".

Only sophomore center Udoka Azubuike, who finished with 10 points and nine rebounds, joined Vick in double figures for KU (7-1).

LaVar Ball Gives Joel Embiid Advice Following 76ers Loss to Lakers
Embiid led the way for Philadelphia with 33 points on 11-for-17 shooting, seven rebounds, six assists, five blocks and a steal. Julius Randle and Jordan Clarkson added 16 apiece off the bench for Los Angeles, which snapped a five-game losing streak.

The Huskies, who shot 48.3 percent from the field, received double-figure contributions from four players. "I thought the guys executed and made shots". Kansas is the only team in the nation with five scorers averaging 11.9 or more points. He didn't get into the game.

Graham, coming off back-to-back 35-point outbursts, was held to three points on 1-for-8 shooting. Kansas coach Bill Self became a grandfather for the first time Tuesday when his daughter, Lauren, gave birth to a girl.

What's more, with both Azubuike (seven first-half minutes) and Mitch Lightfoot (five minutes) picking up two fouls apiece early, Washington had an even easier time finding avenues to the rim.
