While the deadline extension will be applicable on several schemes, there will be no change in last date for linking Aadhaar with mobile numbers which is to be done on or before February 6, 2018 by judicial orders.
The Centre has informed the Supreme Court that the deadline for citizens to link their Aadhaar number with various services will be extended by the three months to March 31.
"Therefore, subsequent notifications issued under section/s of Aadhaar Act for requiring Aadhaar as primary identifier by various ministries and departments of Government of India and States/UTs Governments for various services, benefits and subsidies hold the field today", it said.
The attorney general, however, made clear that 6 February next year would remain the deadline for linking Aadhaar for availing uninterrupted mobile services as it had been mandated by the apex court. The Centre told the three-judge bench that it will extend the deadline for those who did not apply for the Aadhaar card yet and do not possess any id proof.
Senior advocate Shyam Divan, appearing for those who are opposed to Aadhaar scheme told the bench, also comprising Justices AM Khanwilkar and DY Chandrachud, that the central government should give an undertaking that no coercive steps would be taken against those fail to link their Aadhaar with various services.
