Iraq demands US backtrack on Jerusalem

US President Donald Trump reversed decades of US policy on Wednesday and recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, imperiling Middle East peace efforts and upsetting the Arab world and Western allies alike.

The alert, posted on December 6, is a "worldwide caution" that asks us citizens to be on high-alert when traveling.

The US, which is leading a large-scale operation against Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS) in Iraq, has about 5,200 troops in the country, according to the latest statement from the US Defense Department.

On Thursday, the Iraqi government demanded the United States reverse its decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital.

The State Department previously issued a travel warning for Israel on April 11, 2017.

In addition, the US embassy in London posted an urgent "security message" on its verified Twitter account, warning Americans in Great Britain "of the need for caution and personal awareness" after the president's controversial declaration. "These facilities may temporarily close or periodically suspend public services to assess their security posture".

"Americans in Jordan are encouraged to maintain a low profile and to remain alert to developments", the message said.

The department on Tuesday urged USA citizens to avoid Jerusalem's Old City and the West Bank over fears of protests and violent reaction to the president's announcement.

He also proclaimed Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

A prominent Iraqi militia, the Iran-backed Harakat Hezbollah al-Nujaba, said Trump's decision could become a "legitimate reason" to attack USA forces in Iraq.

Palestinian have demanded that part of Jerusalem be set aside as their capital and the worldwide community has traditionally view Tel Aviv as the capital of Israel. "No civilized, democratic and peace-loving people will tolerate it".

"We caution against the risky repercussions of this decision on the stability of the region and the world", an Iraqi government statement said.

Turkey, a US and North Atlantic Treaty Organisation ally, threatened to sever ties with Israel if the USA were to make such a declaration and the Palestinians said they would cut off contact with their USA government liaisons, CBS News reported.
