Google is working to make YouTube a safer environment for creatives. From ballads to covers and original compositions, in 2017 the people of Ireland searched most for videos that had a distinctly green tint to them. Spokeswoman Michelle Slavich said Tuesday that some have already been hired, and the team will be a combination of employees and contractors.

She said the company has developed "computer learning" technology that highlights extremist videos and will deploy the same for tracking videos that risk children's safety and promulgate hate speech.

Google is pulling its popular YouTube video service from Amazon's Fire TV and Echo Show streaming devices in an escalating feud that has caught consumers in the crossfire.

YouTube has also shut down comments on videos which have been placed in this "limited state", and removed view counts and up-votes and down-votes, making it impossible to see the reach of the video, or know how it has been received.

YouTube has grappled with a series of controversies this year concerning videos available on its platform. There was also a conspiracy-theory video that came up in a YouTube search a day after the October Las Vegas shooting that killed dozens.

The company is recruiting thousands of reviewers to reduce the amount of "problematic content" on its video platform. Facebook in May said it would hire 3,000 more people to review videos and posts, and, later, another 1,000 to review ads after discovering Russian ads meant to influence the US presidential election.
