At least 13 injured in massive NY factory explosion

A private label contract packaging and filling firm founded in 1980, New Windsor-based Verla offers nail polish, color cosmetics, personal care items, creams, lotions, fragrances and more, according to the company's website.

In total, 20 people were injured - 15 Verla employees - and then 5 Newburgh firefighters, who were injured by the second explosion.

All are expected to survive.

Witnesses described an acrid smell in the air nearby the plant, NBC said. A shelter-in-place order was issued for a half-mile radius around the building for much of the day. Officials said none of the injuries appear to be life threatening. A cause of the blasts and fire has yet to be determined. Of those violations, six were classified as "serious". He wrote in a post that people were seen "running scattering" in the street after Monday's blasts.

He said the crews were still battling the blaze early Monday afternoon.
