U.S. President Donald Trump said on Tuesday he had made clear during his trip to Asia that the United States was open to trading with other countries, but only if conditions were fair for his country. "And I'm really proud of that".

Trump did not publicly take Duterte to task for the crackdown. Polls prior to the visit showed only about 25 percent of Japanese people had confidence in Mr. Trump.

He met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and highlighted their two nations' "deeper and more comprehensive" ties, looking to strengthen a relationship that is vital to the United States vision of an Indo-Pacific region that attempts to de-emphasise China's influence.

Hideo Iwasaki, a member of the management team at Mainichi Shimbun, a major newspaper in the Japanese capital, told The Washington Times that Mr. Abe "clearly made an effort to appear close to Trump", but it was not clear whether the Japanese public viewed the visit in a positive light. The White House has suggested the president may designate North Korea as a state sponsor of terrorism. "Trump is showing very good at top sales diplomacy".

Prime Minister Narendra Modi met his Australian counterpart Malcolm Turnbull on the sidelines of ASEAN Summit in Philippines' Manila on Tuesday.

When White House reporters traveling with Trump asked whether the issue of human rights had come up at a meeting between the two presidents Monday, both Trump and Duterte declined to respond. At the opening ceremony in Manila, Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte, said that the two days of meetings presented an excellent opportunity to engage in meaningful discussion on matters of regional and global importance. Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders didn't say if Trump had been critical of Duterte's violent war on the illegal drug trade.

The two sides sealed four agreements and agreed to cooperate on counter-terror. Trump, by contrast, said on Monday he had a "great relationship" with Duterte.

Duterte has been embroiled in controversies ever since he took the Philippines' presidential seat in June previous year.
