Other tax increases include a new annual fee based on a car's worth starting January 1, 2018, and in 2020, there will be a $100 annual fee on electric cars.

Republican leaders are trying to gather signatures to place a ballot measure repeal of SB1 before voters next year. By July 2019, the gas base excise tax is slated to rise an additional 17.3 cents per gallon.

California raised its tax on fuel by 12 cents per gallon-and 20 cents for diesel, and many drivers aren't thrilled with the increase.

The tax and a new vehicle fee are part of a transportation package approved by the Legislature and signed by Gov.

Diesel taxes will go up by 20 cents a gallon and diesel sales taxes will rise by 4 points to 13 percent.

While the winter blend will hide the impact of the gas tax hike for now, that may not be the case next year when drivers will be pumping the pricier summer fuel.
