Why PJ Dozier is wearing Kevin Durant's No. 35

The former Gamecocks point guard wore No. 35 for the Mavs and will wear those same digits in OKC.

The last, and only Thunder player to wear No. 35 was Kevin Durant.

Dozier is wearing Kevin Durant's old No. 35 jersey. Dozier wore 35 with the Dallas Mavericks, who brought the 20-year-old out of SC to a training camp deal, and asked to wear it with Oklahoma City to honor his late second cousin, Reggie Lewis.

The 20-year-old went undrafted this year and was once projected as a mid-first round pick after helping the South Carolina Gamecocks get to the Final Four, but after further review of his medical history, National Basketball Association teams shied away from selecting him, ultimately falling out of the draft board.

He helped lead Gamecocks to last season's Final Four - averaging 13.9 points and 2.8 assists in the 2016-17 campaign.

No. 35 has a deeper meaning to Dozier.

"I think anytime you have someone that's been out of contact for a while as Patrick has, and certainly Raymond, you always want to see how they respond coming out of contact, just where they're at", Donovan said.

Dozier will likely begin the season with the Thunder's G-League team, the Oklahoma City Blue.

Two-way contract players can spend a maximum of 45 days on the the National Basketball Association team's roster.
