Officer shot in New Orleans East, NOPD says

A New Orleans Police Department officer died after being shot while on patrol early Friday in New Orleans East, according to authorities. The officers returned fire and the suspect was also struck. The name of the officer has not been released.

The fallen officer, who had suffered multiple gunshot wounds, was rushed to an area hospital where he passed away, Harrison told reporters outside the hospital.

The shooting occurred just before 12:30 a.m., as the officer exchanged gunfire with a suspect at Cindy Place Apartments.

"This hurts, I can't begin to tell you how much this hurts", Harrison added.

The officer was transported to University Medical Center, where he died.

A woman who identified herself only as Cassie, said she and her neighbors had to evacuate their nearby apartment building early Friday.

There was a large police presence in an apartment complex near where the shooting happened. He said that's when a suspect fired shots, hitting the officer. NOPD officers at the scene were joined by members of Louisiana State Police as well as the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. He is in a local hospital, and will be charged once he is released.
