Ireland likely to play first Test against Pakistan

It will be played over two years with six series - three home and three away - for each participant.

The Test Championship, however, won't include Zimbabwe, Afghanistan and Ireland. Each competing team will play in eight series over that time, each one being played over three matches. After continued speculation and near confirmations, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has finally announced that Ireland will play their first Test match against Pakistan in May 2018 in Dublin, Ireland.

Incidentally, Ireland announced their arrival in worldwide cricket by beating a full-strength Pakistan side in the 2007 cricket world cup. A set of playing conditions for four-day Tests is set to be drawn up by ICC management in coming weeks.

The test championship is planned to involve nine countries and be run over a two-year cycle, while a 13-nation ODI league would operate between World Cups and also be used to determine which teams qualify for the showpiece 50-overs tournament every four years. They were scheduled to tour India in early 2018 but that bilateral series remains off limits now owing to the Indian Government's stance. New Zealand is committed to five-day cricket at this stage.
