Dawkins exited the game after being hit hard by Lewis, but his replacement, sophomore Khalil Tate, got to work quickly, faking out most of CU's defense on a keeper which turned into a 58-yard touchdown run.
Montez has not throw the ball much, as Colorado's offensive line had a hard time protecting him. The mark was held by Northern Illinois' Jordan Lynch, who gained 321 yards rushing on November 26, 2013.
While neither of the two teams are ranked or have made a tremendous amount of noise in the Pac-12 so far in 2017, this contest could have significant repercussions in the Pac-12 South race. But an evening riddled with struggles and mistakes for the Buffs also housed a lone bright spot - running back Phil Lindsay's dominant 282-yard, three-touchdown performance, which enshrined him in the CU record books as he became the program's all-time leader in all-purpose yards.
The CU Independent will have a full report on the action between Arizona and Colorado after the game ends. Dawkins is one of the conference's most risky dual threats, leading all Pac-12 quarterbacks in rushing with 85.2 yards per game, but hispassing is still a work in progress, as he ranks 10th in the league inefficiency with 670 yards, five TDs and three interceptions.
Arizona Wildcats quarterback Khalil Tate (14). He has completed 9 of 10 passes for 74 yards and a touchdown. "About halfway through the second quarter, except when we had to kick the field goal (at the end of the half), everything was four-down territory".
Tate was sensational, and the Buffs (3-3, 0-3 Pac-12), still trying to prove previous year wasn't an aberration, came up short again.
"I think you have to hit the drawing board, take it a week at a time, quarter by quarter, half by half, game by game", senior safety Ryan Moeller said of what the Buffs have to do in the second half of the season.
Tate finished his high school career with 3,543 passing yards, 3,625 rushing yards and 82 touchdowns.

Sissy Spacek, Bill Skarsgård appear in 'Castle Rock' teaser
Spacek, who starred in King's iconic film Carrie noted, "I was afraid I might never have the opportunity to do something this twisted again".
"The offense did everything they could", MacIntyre said.
All week, the Buffs prepared to face Arizona starter Brandon Dawkins, who came in leading the team in rushing.
A shame, really, because even though Arizona quarterback Khalil Tate was the star in CU's 45-42 defeat, Lindsay matched him almost blow-for-blow with explosive plays.
"I knew it was right around the corner", CU coach Mike MacIntyre said.
Tate soon found Brown in the endzone and the Wildcats capitalized before halftime, taking a 21-14 lead.
"At the end of the day, it comes down to Colorado, it's all about Colorado", Lindsay said.
In addition to his 327 yards rushing - on just 14 carries - Tate completed 11-of-12 passes for 142 yards and another score.
