A bomb attack hit a southern district of Damascus, Syrian state media reported.

Two terrorists attacked al-Midan Police Department in Damascus city on Monday, leaving a number of people dead. After that, one of the two terrorists blew himself up with an explosive belt right in front of the main gate of the department.

Witnesses said a auto bomb exploded outside the district's police station as a suicide attacker also blew himself up inside the station.

State-affiliated al-Ikhbariyeh TV reported earlier Monday that an attacker detonated a vehicle bomb in front of a police station in the city's al-Midan neighborhood, before two more suicide bombers blew themselves up.

"Afterwards I heard gunfire, which usually happens to get people to move out of the way and clear the road so ambulances can get through to retrieve the injured", she added. Syria's government is battling the Islamic State group as well as other insurgents as part of a complex, six-year-old civil war.
