Trump Attacks 'Politically Motivated Ingrates' After Hurricane Maria

In the first part of the sketch, Trump, in his golf wear, bickers with San Juan mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz (played by Melissa Villaseñor) over the the relief efforts in Puerto Rico, which he just learned was a US territory.

"They want everything to be done for them when it should be a community effort", the president tweeted.

But Carmen Yulin Cruz, the mayor of San Juan, heatedly denied that.

Cruz went on to compliment workers from the Federal Emergency Management Agency and homeland security adviser Tom Bossert for their work in recent days to restore power to parts of the island. "It's a good start", she said but a lot more still needs to be done.

"We are dying here, and I can not fathom the thought that the greatest nation in the world can not figure out logistics for a small island of 100 miles by 35 miles", Cruz said Friday.

Numerous others have been scathing in their criticism, pointing out that the "workers" Trump addressed are USA citizens who are struggling to rebuild after a crisis with limited food, water and electricity supplies.

Trump, who says he will visit the island Tuesday, has been slow to react to pleas, but quick to respond to criticism that he has given Puerto Rico less attention than he gave to Texas and Louisiana after Hurricane Harvey and Florida, where he keeps a second weekend home, after Irma.

And some Republicans in Congress are already chafing at repealing the deduction for state and local taxes . New benefits would be given to firms in which the profits double as the owners' personal income.

Later Saturday, Cruz - who has been living in a shelter after her home was destroyed in the hurricane - told MSNBC that the issue was not personal and said municipal employees were working as hard as they could. You have been GOLFING. Even so, everyone knew Maria was a Category Five storm and that Puerto Rico had been bludgeoned by it. "And I can not fathom the thought that the greatest nation in the world can not figure out logistics for a small island of 100 miles by 35 miles long", Cruz said Friday. He tweeted: "The Mayor of San Juan, who was extremely complimentary just a couple of days back, has now been told by the Democrats that you should be awful to Trump". The president also dedicated several tweets to pushing back against what he described as "fake news" about the response to Hurricane Maria, which killed at least 16 people in the USA territory. So far NBC's Lester Holt has been the only broadcast network anchor to report on the storm from Puerto Rico, a telling measure of the story's importance to news executives.

He said the people of Puerto Rico, who are American citizens, are entitled to the same help as anyone else in the United States.

Trump has said that the results of the USA recovery effort in Puerto Rico will "speak much louder than complaints" by Mayor Cruz, and has said that he will be on the ground there on Tuesday.

At a news conference, Rossello declined to comment on Trump's tweets, which he said he had not seen. They're all getting so exhausted.

"Her commitment has been through actions, not words, with the impoverished people of San Juan", political analyst Nestor Duprey said, adding that those efforts continued after the hurricane.
